My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is one of those books that I really like, whilst simultaneously not really being sure why. Thompson as a knack for describing the sordid - the alcohol fuelled world of journalism happening in Puerto Rico feels realistically sweaty, grimy and quite gross. Everyone body is too hot, too drunk and too angry at the world and the descriptions Thompson provides, as well as the crude, short and snappy dialogue does much to absorb you into this world.
It's just that not a lot happens for a long time, before it all seems to happen in droves. It makes you question who and why you agree with and your own morales, all the while feeling like you're sweating rum through your very pores.
Worth a read if you're a fan.
