Really adored this second entry in the Wayfarers books by Becky Chambers. Following on directly from the events in the epic conclusion of A Long Way To A Small And Angry Planet but without any prior knowledge assumed, A Closed And Common Orbit can be enjoyed as a completely stand alone novel in it's own right.
A tale of morality, ethics, technology and AI, the story alternates between the perspective of Sidra - a newly homed AI inside an illegal human body kit, and Jane, a clone who escapes from a slave factory off world and who meets an AI housed within a shuttle wreckage who tries to educate Jane and eventually help her to try and escape the planet where she was grown.
It feels less hectic than the first novel, but has a really nicely tense and exciting conclusion in which the characters tales all converge. It was so easy to invest in each of the characters, and I genuinely felt I understood both Pepper's and Sidra's point of views. Sidra in particular can seem ungrateful about her new life, but it's easy to see how she struggles with the transition.
The amount of races, species and cultures described is done just as beautifully as in the first book. It's so detailed that it's extremely easy to believe and lose yourself in this other universe. The attention to detail and fantastic pace make this a real page turner and an absolute must read for fans of sci-fi.
