My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have nothing but praise for the Memoirs of Lady Trent series, and this fourth installment attains that equally high standard of the first 3 books. Throughout the series, Brennan introduces dragons into a pseudo-victorian society in an utterly captivating and convincing way. All have been so charming, exciting and lovingly written, whilst being intelligently thought through so that all branches of science and anthropology discussed feel absolutely true, until you reach the end of the book and realise that you must wait for the next installment to become absorbed by this reality again.
In the familiar style, scientific observations are blended with Lady Trent's social experiences; relationships with other cultures are once again at the forefront of this fourth installment, where we learn of Lady Trent's position taken up with the Royal Scirling Army to attempt to breed dragons. This takes her and Tom into the Akhian desert, setting up camp and become a part of an almost Islamic society. The challenges are difficult, the environment harsh, the Draconean ruins they explore wonderful and we even have some familiar faces reappear.
This has been everything I would want of a sequel. I also feel you could drop in at this book and not feel too confused. It's set up so well and really feels like a more clever, dragon infused, victorian version of Indiana Jones. Please, please read this series.
