When human's left the Earth they ruined behind to live in giant, self contained space centres, lots of traditions went with it. As time pasis, their ways and rituals seem archaic to some, with more people wishing to leave the fleet in favour of space travel or a planetside existence.
Tessa, the sister of Ashby from the first Wayfarers novel, enjoys the existence she has aboard the Exodus fleet, but isn't sure how long this can continue as times move on.
Isabell is an Archivist, guarding the historical data records of human past aboard a great number of servers within the fleet. She is in the business of showing an alien ethnographer around the station explaining their ways of life.
Eyas, a caretaker, is the performer of funeral rites, something that has come from Earth and is a long standing tradition aboard the Exodus fleet. She is one of the few people Sawyer meets when he leaves planetside in favour of the fleet, to see if this existence might be for him.
And Kip, a struggling teen who feels guilt at wanting to leave but doesn't quite feel like he belongs anywhere amongst the fleet.
This story is not like the previous 2 int he series, with their quick pace and hi-octane action sequences. Instad, this does more to delve into the history of humanity, the exodus fleet and the family and social relationships within.
Despite this, I was utterly absorbed. All the characters have interesting personalities, jobs or both and genuinely relatable issues. I really felt for all of the characters at some moment or another. It can be elating, interesting, sad, morose exciting but is all the while wholly absorbing. Chambers crafts an existence so utterly believable and such a likable cast that she's created another astounding pageturner.
All sci-fi fans should read the Chambers' books now.
