Another entry in the Rivers Of London series with more fab magic meets detective fiction writing from Ben Aaronovitch. Peter Grant, our recently promoted Detective Inspector with added maggical oomph is back investigating the dreaded faceless man, Martin Chorley, as he vamps up plans that stem from the immense power that magical sacrifice can provide. Can Peter work with his old friend and colleague Lesley to thwart these schemes?
Another entry in the Rivers Of London series I could not put down. Very funny, witty and imbued with local knowledge that shows Aaronovitch really cares about the subject material. It's imaginative and inventive despite being the 7th entry in the series, and shows real progression as all the characters seemed to have grown, developed and become more magically adept, progress that I thought was shown too slowly in some of the previous stories.
Definitely worth a read for fans of the series. My only issue is that my hardback copy was awfully edited and/or proofed, with missing words, dodgy sentences and some paragraphs that just made no sense. I thought this was me, but I've re-read them a number of times and there's definitely something not right in bits. Still, fill in the blanks yourself and this is another fantastic story for Peter Grant.
