The latest Rivers Of London story, False Value, sees our beloved magical copper, Peter Grant, going undercover for a Google-esque company where the owner, Terrance Skinner is harboring a secret at the top of his technological tower. Harking back to the days of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage whilst moving forward to the exciting and terrifying implications of artificial intelligence.
Of course, Skinner may have gotten a taste for the demi monde and all is not what it seems with his creation. But who or what is pulling the strings of this mystery? With an interesting cast including the good favourites from Guleed, Nightingale, Molly and Bev (with whom Peter is now expecting twins!) and and new additions from his tabletop game playing coworkers, lethal body guards and of course his new boss, Skinner the story has a few interweaving narratives all columinating in a suitably cliff-hanger conclusion, allowing a neat ending and new nemesis for the next novel...(surely?).
In fact, that would be my only complaint about the novel is that the conclusion seems almost too geared towards that inevitable sequel. That said, however this story's writing and editing is massively improved from the previous Novella and the subject matter appeals to me so much as a self confessed geek. Giant musical computers; killer 3D printed drones and lots of geek references to keep all the dorks content, this is an excellent entry in the Rivers series and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Additionally, I have a lovely signed copy bought from the Forbidden Planet megastore in London with a GLOW IN THE DARK COVER. It's a beautiful one for the collection as well as a fantastic story.
