My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Ocean At The End Of The Lane feels like a fairy tale for grown ups. A middle aged man revisits a farmhouse near to his childhood home and suddenly remembers all the strange, bizarre, sometimes wonderful and sometimes terrifying events that happened to him as a seven year old introvert child.
Discovering monsters, magic and the unusual, comforting and mystical family living in Hempstock farm, the story is sometimes confusing but always beautifully written, more akin to a painting then a story and some of the imagery is really dark and disturbing. Tim Burton would do a good job of doing a film adaptation should it ever arise.
It's incredibly eerie and a haunting story, and definitely worth a read for fans of the unusual, magical and dark. The world Gaiman portrays is all of that and more.
