"From out of the dark"

From Out Of The Dark

From out of the dark is a collection of 6 songs finished during the infamous Covid lockdown of 2020, drawing musical influences from many different genres and based on different themes close to my heart.

Some with a narrative, others about how I felt a particular junction in life, playing music, writing and recording songs has been a great outlet for me and helped me deal with and express myself in a productive fashion.

With no single genre over the six songs I decided to put them out as From out of the dark, to show how something good can come from the darkness. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed making them.

I appreciate so much all the friends and family who have helped critique these tracks ready for public consumption. Thanks also to my younger sister, Hannah, for providing her vocal talents and lyric writing on two of the songs.

The Run-Out Groove (The Vinyl Detective #2)The Run-Out Groove by Andrew Cartmel

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Vinyl Detective is a charity shop record hunter now music detective, and after his success in book 1 in this series by Andrew Cartmel (Various Doctor Who books and stories, Rivers of London Graphic Novels) it isn't long before he and his cat loving girlfriend, Nevada, together with friends 'Clean-Head' and Tinkler, are travelling around the country (well, to Canterbury) in search of a rare record and a missing child.

Things soon take a dark turn. This couldn't be our crew being overly paranoid after the events in "Written in the Dead Wax" could it? It looks this way, right up until they get dosed with psychedelic drugs and locked into a house targeted for arson. Maybe not so paranoid after all.

Just like before, Cartmel is fantastically easy to read. His rosta of characters are extremely vivid and imaginable, and you really grow to like the 4 friends rather a lot. The interviewees throughout the book all have their interesting quirks and Cartmel has a knack for realising them.

The story moves a long at a good pace and there's never a dull moment. It's funny, tense and extremely compelling, and as before Cartmel really knows his stuff with regards to music and Hi-Fi equipment.

Just as you think you know how things may turn out, something changes and makes you reevaluate. A great bit of easy to read detective fiction for music lovers. Recommend for fans of things like Rivers of London, Warlock Holmes and the Inspector Chopra books. Loved it.
