Jazz music! Rare records! Cats! Neo-Nazi thugs! Andrew Cartmel is back with another brilliant entry in the Vinyl Detective novels.
This time the Vinyl Detective is recruited to obtain rare shellac 78 records from a WW2 big band group known as the Flare Path Orchestra. In hunting them down, our protagonist uncovers not only some uniquely arranged big band compositions, but also that the war still continues for some people, and secrets become uncovered left, right and centre. Whilst this leads to the solving an long retired murder case of course things aren't quite that straight forward, and Nevada and hubby get into many scrapes, break-ins, are shot at and even buried alive...
The same crew show up this time, including beloved Tinkler, Clean Head and of course, Turk and Fanny with an interesting cast of WW2 airman and ex musicians/band members, all with interesting traits and stories to tell or uncover.
There's such a good mix of action, tension, levity and excitement as we've come to expect from Cartmel's polished writing style. Different enough from the first 2 books to be intriguing but similar enough to still give you what you crave. An excellent read for fans of the series.
